Friends of Segedunum donate £500 to exhibition programme

The Friends of Segedunum have donated £500 to Segedunum Roman Fort to support the Museum’s exhibition programme.

The Friends group supports and encourages interest and appreciation of Wallsend’s atmospheric Roman fort, including the Museum, archaeological site and the distinctive history of the area.

Members not only contribute funds, but also their time and knowledge by volunteering in many ways; giving tours, gardening, litter picking and even crowd control at Segedunum’s popular annual fireworks event.

Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager said:

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the Friends of Segedunum for their generosity.

“As well as supporting the Museum with funding towards specific projects, the Friends are wonderful ambassadors for Segedunum and help out in various ways.  The time and energy that they give, together with their knowledge and enthusiasm, makes a huge difference and is greatly appreciated.”

Ken Hutchinson, Chairman of the Friends of Segedunum said:

“Wallsend is very lucky to have one of the best Roman museums in the country. One of our main aims is to encourage visitors to Segedunum, in particular repeat visits. One way this can be achieved is through high quality temporary exhibitions.

“Segedunum has over recent years shown very impressive exhibitions - in partnership with the British Museum for example, among others. When we have funds available we are always keen to donate money to support the Museum as the exhibition programme is a vital part of the offer at Segedunum.”

The Friends of Segedunum was established soon after the museum opened in 2000; members are very passionate about the museum and the site’s heritage.

Anyone can join the Friends of Segedunum, everyone is welcome. As well as supporting the Museum there are a wide range of benefits.

Members get free entry to the Museum (usually £5.95 for adults on the door); 10% discount in the Museum gift shop; access to expert talks, activities and social events – and more.

Membership costs £12 per year, £9.50 for concessions. For more information or to become a Friend of Segedunum contact Secretary Liz Liddle at secretary@segedunumfriends.co.uk or by calling (0191) 278 4217.
