One-Stop Carriers for Causes donation updates Segedunum's activity room

21 February 2018

The learning team at Segedunum Roman Fort have been able to redecorate the museum’s activity space thanks to a donation from One-Stop Carriers for Causes at Groundwork UK.

The room is used by people from all walks of life in the community; visiting school groups, community groups and adult learning groups like the University of the Third Age (U3A). The space is also used for the museum’s regular learning activities with local schools, and is where family activities are regularly held during school holidays.

Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager said:

“Thanks to One-Stop Carriers for Causes we’ve been able to redecorate and greatly enhance the learning space. The new improved rooms will enable us to keep providing an area for the community in all its guises to use- it’s in constant use.

“The donation has given us the basis for an overhaul of the whole area, and the team have sourced other objects from the museum to enhance the space too.”

The rooms also feature a stratigraphic wall, a Hadrian’s Wall mural, and exhibition panels recycled from the Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition last year.

In the year 2016-17, over 9,100 children alone took part in some sort of educational activity with the team at the museum and over 2,000 people used the rooms as part of community or outreach sessions.

The Segedunum learning team provide an extensive learning programme covering a variety of curriculum areas – for more information see https://segedunumromanfort.org.uk/learning.

Assistant learning officer Alina Trewhitt has spoken about the redecoration and also demonstrates what school children learn in one of the workshops.

The rooms are not just for learning; they are used for a variety of activities including mindfulness workshops and Roman themed birthday parties.

Children under 16 always have free entry to Segedunum Roman Fort, and adult admissions charges apply; season tickets are also available.
