Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM), which manages nine museums and galleries across Tyneside and the Archives for Tyne & Wear, is seeking a new independent member of its Audit Committee.

The Audit Committee works to ensure that a comprehensive, coordinated and effective framework of internal control and corporate governance is maintained across the organisation, on behalf of the Joint Archives & Museums Committee.

Whilst it is essential that applicants should have financial awareness, an accounting background or qualification is less important than a broad understanding of business practice, risk and control, and corporate governance. A professional legal qualification or experience would be an advantage.

TWAM is supported by the four Tyneside local authorities and Newcastle University. TWAM is also a Major Partner Museum funded by Arts Council England and has Core Funded Museum status.

The term of office for the new member of the Audit Committee will be four years and the role is voluntary, although reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Anyone interested in undertaking the role of independent member should prepare a short paper, maximum 500 words, indicating why they consider themselves to be suitable for the position and attach details of their previous experience. They should be returned to Jackie Reynolds, Head of Finance, Governance & Resources, at Discovery Museum, Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4JA / jackie.reynolds@twmuseums.org.uk, by Friday 14 October 2016.

Applicants must not have been a member or officer of the four constituent authorities (Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside) within the past five years nor have close business or professional links with any of the authorities. Interviews will take place in October and November.
