Arts Award Work Experience

A new offer for young people undertaking work experience

We have recently been able to offer young people who undertake their work experience placements with us the opportunity to complete a Discover Lever Arts Award qualification. Arts Award encourages children and young people aged up to 25 to explore any art form including performing arts, visual arts, literature, media and multimedia. The award builds confidence, helps young people to enjoy cultural activities, and prepares them for further education or employment.

Madeline, a student from a local secondary school, attended Discovery Museum in July for her one week work experience placement, undertaking various roles with different teams within the venue. This included working with the learning staff, the trading team and the front of house staff. Madeline recorded her experiences in her Arts Log, spent time talking to the members of staff who’s jobs inspired her the most, and thought about which aspects of the week she’d most enjoyed (and least enjoyed!).

From this, Madeline was inspired to create a piece of art based on her experiences working at Discovery Museum. It is up to each individual what type of art form they would like to work in – drawing, painting, poetry or prose, music, or whatever appeals to them the most – and Madeline chose to paint a picture that brought together all of the things she has enjoyed or been particularly inspired by.

We were very impressed with Madeline’s work, and are happy to say she passed! She will receive her certificate when she returns to school in September.

Discover Arts Award will now be something we regularly offer to any young people who come to do their work experience at one of our venues. We are also working on developing a programme which will include the opportunity to complete the higher level Bronze Arts Award during work experience.
